- A baby born on an Orlando-bound Southwest Airlines flight has been named Jet and is in critical condition, hospital officials said. The flight, en route to Orlando from Pennsylvania, diverted to Charleston, South Carolina, on Sunday because of the emergency. Jet and his mother were taken to Medical University of South Carolina, where Jet is in the neonatal intensive care unit. Jet was born at 26 weeks gestation, 14 weeks early, and weighed just over 2 pounds. “Jet was placed on a ventilator and given a medicine called surfactant to help with his breathing,” hospital spokeswoman HeatherWoolwine said. “So far, his blood pressure has been stable, and he is being treated for a possible infection at the time of birth. It is remarkable that he was able to go for some time without some type of respiratory support while on his way to us.” The family, whose full names have not been released, had the name Jet on their list of baby names, even before his unexpected arrival, Woolwine said. The family was traveling to the Orlando area for a baby shower. Watch News 6 and stay with ClickOrlando.com for more on this story.
